Motown: The Broadway Musical has obvious ties to Harlem

One can’t swing a bat without hitting the word Harlem. I say that all the time and it’s how I feel again when reading about the upcoming Broadway musical called Motown. I just came across a write-up in Vanity Fair and all I thought about is how this musical has a connection to Harlem.

Based on what I have read so far, Motown: The Broadway Musical will be very good. I will probably go see it. However, I can’t help but repeat myself on how the show obviously has a strong historical connection to Harlem. Most of the music and the artists that will be featured in the new musical, which opens in April, made their debut at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater, such as The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and more.

I am guessing there will be one scene or at least a mention of Harlem in the show. We’ll find out soon since previews of Motown: The Broadway Musical begins March 11 and opening night is April 14.

Zoe Cafe and Hookah Lounge opens on Harlem’s restaurant row

The Middle Eastern tradition of enjoying a hookah pipe is now available on Harlem’s restaurant row. Zoe Cafe and Hookah Lounge recently opened on the corner of West 121st Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. They opened a few weeks ago. Hookahs range from $10-12 with a variety of flavors offered, such as apple, grape, cherry, mint, coconut, peach, mango and much more. On the cafe side, Zoe’s offers coffee, tea, bottled water, sodas and dessert starting at $2.

If interested in trying a hookah pipe, no need to go far now. There’s a hookah lounge right here in Central Harlem. I also recommend Kiosk in East Harlem. They have hookah pipes on their menu as well.

And a big disclaimer, hookah pipes are for ADULTs ONLY!

Free screening in Harlem of The Central Park Five

The LeRoy Neiman Art Center in Harlem will present a free screening of The Central Park Five on Saturday, February 16th at 4:00 pm. The celebrated documentary, created by Ken Burns, David McMahon and Sarah Burns, bears revealing facts about the 1989 case in which five Harlem youth were falsely accused and convicted of a crime that Mayor Koch coined “The Crime of the Century.”

This screening allows the community an opportunity, not only to examine facts and fiction, but to engage in creative exploration, and dialogue with the men at the center of the storm-who are still fighting for justice some twenty years later.

The two-hour screening will be followed by a Q&A and Open Mic Poetry Jam led by Yusef Salaam, who has been writing poetry since age 11. RSVP is recommended by calling 212.862.2787

The Fourth Annual Spring Harlem Restaurant and Retail Month starts February 15

Harlem Park to Park kicks off its fourth annual Spring Harlem Restaurant and Retail Month tomorrow (Feb 15) with an impressive list of restaurant and retail establishments in Central Harlem. With food options like Ristorante Settepani’s Braised Monkfish, and the Chicken and Red Velvet Waffles at 67 Orange Street; along with services that include a week’s worth of Unlimited Led Classes from Land Yoga, and the popular Men’s Razor Relief Treatment at Harlem Skin Clinic, Harlemites and visitors alike can experience a variety of options and opportunities to sample Harlem’s finest offerings from February 15 – 28.

It’s Afro Funk Night at Harlem’s bier international

Bier international is doing things a little differently for Valentine’s Day. Tomorrow, Feb 14th, bier international is inviting everyone over, with date or without, to Afro Funk Night. If you feel like taking a journey to the music of the African Diaspora by DJ Jeremiah, head on over tomorrow to bier international at 2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd., between 113th and 114th Street. Music starts at 8pm to 2am.

Harlem Shake goes viral, real Harlem Shake coming to Harlem at 124th and Lenox Avenue

The Harlem Shake by New York deejay Baauer has gone viral twice over. It’s everywhere! While everyone is doing the Harlem Shake, don’t forget the Village of Harlem is actually getting a Harlem Shake, which will be a restaurant that will serve “burgers, shakes and good times, [the] Harlem way.” The restaurant will be located on the southwest corner of 124th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem. It’s in construction right now, but progress is being made and will open soon. Just follow them on Facebook or Twitter to view their progress.

Standing Tall, Inc. moving to 101 West 116th Street in Harlem

New Street Realty Advisors, LLC announced today the successful lease transaction between Standing Tall, Inc., a school for non‐verbal children with physical impairments, and Mitchell Enterprises, the owners of 101 West 116th Street Realty, Corp. The site, located at the northwest corner of West 116th Street and Lenox Avenue in Central Harlem, is composed of a 10,000 square foot on the second floor with a dedicated entrance on the ground floor, fronting West 116th Street. Standing Tall will take occupancy of the space immediately and anticipates an opening this spring.

Since its inception in 1997, Standing Tall is a special education school that provides the unique environment, experts, technology, and experiences needed to provide non‐verbal children with physical impairments a path of true communication and learning. Standing Tall serves all non‐verbal children, ages 5 through 21 with a brain injury, neuro‐motor disorder and neurological disease.

Standing Tall has been on the hunt for a new space for the past two years, having outgrown its location at 200 Riverside Blvd. on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The board was on the verge of closing the school until New Street Realty Advisors stepped in, helping the school create a leasing strategy and securing the new location in Central Harlem.

NYC Green Market looking to make Harlem its home, feedback needed

A reader dropped us a line over the weekend we found interesting. Apparently there is a NYC Green Market movement actively discussing bringing a farmers market to the vacant lot in Harlem at West 117 Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. This is the space where the Harlem Pop Up Green Market was held last year. In order to help make it a reality, Grow NYC needs to gain enough community feedback to demonstrate a strong need and desire for the market. They are looking to hear from us.

If interested in providing feedback, send Margaret Hoffman, Green Market Regional Coordinator, an email stating your interest and support of the market in this part of Harlem. Harlem’s Marcus Samuelsson upgrades, buys Harlem townhouse on West 120th Street

According to Curbed.com, Celebrity Chef and Harlemite Marcus Samuelsson and Maya, his gorgeous wife, have some new digs in Harlem. They’re moving on up as 3494879-6the saying goes from West 118th Street to West 120th Street. The socialite couple have purchased a townhouse at 30 West 120th Street for the asking price of $2.895 million. Curbed reports that the deed hit public record yesterday, Feb. 8 and the sale closed in late January. The 4,650-square-foot Harlem townhouse includes five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a garden, and a second entrance that allows the garden level to be a separate apartment.

Curbed takes a jab at the kitchen shown in the listing pics saying “it looks little smaller than we’d expect for a professional chef.” Have any of these folks been in his prior home? Some of us have when the Samuelsson’s hosted the Horn of Africa fundraiser. The kitchen in the new Harlem townhouse is twice is big as what they had in the old Harlem apartment on 118th Street. Not sure what Curbed is basing their comments on, but the new kitchen in the townhouse is perfect for a celebrity chef.

Anyhow congrats to Marcus and Maya on their new Harlem home. It’s crystal clear from the recent home purchase that they plan to stay in Harlem for the long-term! Good for them!

New York City youth can take to the parks today for fun, free snowy activities hosted by NYC Parks & Recreation. Snow Day sites (one in each borough, locations listed below) will host FREE, supervised outdoor recreation and winter fun for youth, including sledding, snowman and snow angel contests, music and complimentary hot chocolate. Sleds will be available to borrow as well.
