30 For 30 Movement headed to Harlem’s Land Yoga

I learned yesterday at yoga that the 30 For 30 Movement is heading to Harlem’s Land Yoga tomorrow, May 20. You may ask, why should I care and who is 30 For 30? Apparently, 30 For 30 is a sisterhood in NYC that supports and inspires woman to commit to at least 30 minutes of exercise or movement for 30 consecutive days. 30 For 30 has chosen to expose their fellow “sistas” to a night of  beginners yoga at Land Yoga in Harlem so that they have another option to consider to help them keep on moving.

If you’re interested in checking out 30 For 30, they will be taking a class at Land Yoga in Harlem tomorrow  (May 20) at 7:45 pm. Better yet, if you’ve ever wanted to try a beginners yoga class at Land Yoga with plenty of other fellow beginners, tomorrow’s class would be perfect!

It’s My Park Day May 18-19: Harlem parks participating, volunteers needed

It’s My Park Day May 18-19 and several Harlem parks are participating.

The Friends of Frederick Douglass Circle are participating today (May 18) and they need our help. They will be weeding and planting annuals in the tree pits adjacent to Frederick Douglass Circle from 9 am to 3 pm.

The group will also be organizing arts and educational events for that day as well.

Interested in participating, meet at Frederick Douglass Circle, which is at 110th Street and FDB. And don’t forget to wear work clothes and bring your own gloves if able. Need more information about this location, contact (212) 280-7800 or email: diannepobuda@yahoo.com.

Harlem Arts Festival Annual Gala May 29, HAF forms new partnership with MIST Harlem

Building on the momentum from their inaugural year, the Harlem Arts Festival will hold their second annual fundraising gala on Wednesday, May 29 at MIST Harlem, a local cultural entertainment center located near 116th Street and Lenox Avenue. The fundraising event is an opportunity for the organization to raise money and awareness about the talent that will hit the festival stage in June through preview performances.

The Harlem Arts Festival has also formed a new partnership with MIST Harlem that will create opportunities and provide an ongoing platform for local artists. While both organizations are fairly new to the Harlem community, they share a vision of creating a central hub for artists to create, experiment and interact with new and existing forms of art in their own backyard.

In addition to hosting this year’s fundraising gala, MIST Harlem will serve as the backdrop for a new open-mic jam session event series hosted by the executive committee of the Harlem Arts Festival.

Tickets for the May 29 gala range from $75 for Young Patrons (under 30) to $150 for VIP guests and are on sale now at www.harlemartsfestival.com/gala.

Inside Harlem Shake Restaurant, opens at noon May 16

HarlemGal Inc was invited to the soft opening/private event of Harlem Shake Restaurant today and yes, we had a great time! Harlem Shake takes you back in time with its vintage look from the 50’s. Not only is Harlem Shake providing a classic look and feel, it is spacious and filled with a ton of light since it sits right on the corner of Lenox Avenue and 124th Street.

Inside there are vinyl stools lined up along their corner windows, vinyl booths posted against the wall where the now famous Harlem Shake photo hangs of the beautiful black women winking, and there is a celebrity wall of signed photos on display wishing Harlem Shake all the best with their upcoming opening. Former President Bill Clinton is up on the wall, along with Janet Jackson to Marcus Samuelsson and more.

As for the food, I had a Harlem Shake cheeseburger for $6.95, sweet yam fries for $3.95 and a Harlem shake shortie for $3.95. The Harlem shake shortie is a red velvet shake made with Tonnie’s Minis Cupcakes. If you like red velvet cake, then you will like this shake.

All of the food items I had were delicious. I especially like the bun on the hamburger. It was very fresh and it stayed connected at the back so nothing dripped out.

Oh, by the way. Harlem Shake will offer bottled and draft beer, plus select wines, from $5-8 for beer and $7 to $12 for a glass of wine.

Harlem Shake will open at noon this Thursday, May 16 as this blog first reported. Their grand opening will be on June 13! See you at Harlem Shake Restaurant.

Congrats to Harlem RBI, Prince Harry is visiting East Harlem today

It’s been all over the news. A Prince will be in Harlem today! According to several online reports, Prince Harry will be in East Harlem to visit Harlem RBI for some baseball and to promote the program. That’s so wonderful for them! Way to go Harlem RBI! That’s a home run!

“For more than 20 years Harlem RBI has been serving the neighborhood.  The organization started by reclaiming an abandoned garbage filled lot and turning it into 2 baseball diamonds that would become true fields of dreams for disadvantaged kids in East Harlem.”

Blink Fitness signage up in Harlem, target opening day June 2013

A friend, reader of HarlemGal Inc., and filmmaker/producer of Changing Face of Harlem, Shawn Batey, sent in a photo over the weekend of signage on the upcoming Blink Fitness, which will be located on 125th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. According to Blink Fitness’ website, the Equinox-owned business is aiming to open this coming June. Attend World Premier Of ‘American Beatboxer’ at Harlem’s Schomburg Center May 15

Harlem, we are all cordially invited to attend the V.I.P. reception of the world premier screening of the film, “American Beatboxer” The documentary hits the stage at the Schomburg Research Center on May 15th in Harlem, NYC.

“American Beatboxer” tells the story of the first ever, American Beatboxing Championship, shot during the summer of 2010, at Littlefield Performance and Art Space in Brooklyn. Contestants of all races from the United States competed, down to eight finalists. This documentary honors the evolution of Beatboxing juxtaposed against the final day of competition to crown the first American beat boxing champion.

I was walking along Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem this evening (May 10) and noticed new signage was up where the old Posh Paws was located, 2121 FDB. The purplish awning says HarlemYo!, Frozen Yogurt, Burritos, Smoothies, Shakes and Salads. Looks like Harlem’s restaurant row is getting another food/eating out option?

American Ballet Theatre and Harlem School of the Arts join forces to form training partnership

American Ballet Theatre and Harlem School of the Arts‘ Dance Department have formed a unique training partnership, which will incorporate ABT’s National Training Curriculum in HSA’s dance curriculum.

Beginning Fall 2013, ABT will train HSA’s dance faculty in the principles of its National Training Curriculum. The establishment of an ABT Certification for HSA will provide a comprehensive training program in ballet for all HSA dance faculty, including student exams to evaluate teachers and students, refresher courses and mentorship. The partnership will be introduced to the Harlem School of the Arts community of dance families and students on Tuesday, May 21 at HSA’s Theater, 649 Saint Nicholas Avenue with a lecture- demonstration presented by the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre.

As a part of the training partnership between American Ballet Theatre and the Harlem School of the Arts, JKO Principal Franco De Vita will conduct master classes at HSA throughout the year and serve as advisors to HSA faculty in order to effectively integrate the new ballet curriculum into HSA’s diverse offering of dance technique including jazz, tap, modern, African and hip hop.

Harlem Shake Restaurant to open to the public May 16, not May 14 as previously reported

If you were planning on stopping by Harlem Shake, the restaurant that is opening up soon on Lenox Avenue on May 14, not so fast. Sources tell HarlemGal Inc that the opening day of Harlem Shake, no not the dance or recent video craze, but the actual restaurant in Harlem, is set to open to the public on May 16.

Similar to most new dining establishments in Harlem, Harlem Shake will do a lot of private practice runs before they actually let the public in. So stand by and be ready on May 16.
