Thank goodness for readers and their juicy tips. Those tips can eventually lead to correct facts. For example, look at our post about a Japanese restaurant opening on Frederick Douglass Blvd. The Winery is opening up the Japanese restaurant. Now the latest tip in is how the owner(s) of bier international in Harlem have taken over the commercial space of where Society Cafe use to be. Society was located on the southeast corner of 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd before it closed in 2011.
Apparently the plans for this space on FDB and 114th Street are to keep it as it was, a cafe, where sandwiches and coffee are sold. The other tip is that the place will more than likely be called Cafe Frederick! Not a bad name…right?
Once this new cafe opens, all the commercial space in the Gateway Tower will be filled and another place can be added to the Frederick Douglass Blvd tourist map, a.k.a. restaurant row, which The Daily News reported on recently.
Update: The name of this establishment ended up being named Frederick Cafe Bistro.

While Gothamist was quick to point out how Amtrak’s external publication titled Arrive called Harlem a borough, which is a poor journalistic and potentially costly PR mistake, I’d like to point out and focus on how Arrive called Harlem “cool” and “hip.” The article says “New Yorkers are taking notice” of Harlem and “if you blink your eye, something changes.” Yes, this transportation company clearly only sees New York City and it’s sub-sections as a bunch of boroughs. Given the ignorance, it could have been worse. But lets focus on what they really got right, which is featuring our beautiful community and local businesses, talking to good spokespeople about Harlem, and ultimately using the best verbs to describe us, which…hey, we have always known, is being a place that is “hip and cool!” Thank you Amtrak!

It’s official…again! Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem from 110th to 125th Street, also known as restaurant row, has its very own map, according to The New York Daily News. And the folks behind the map is an alliance group called Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance (FDBA). Check out the map below. It mentions all existing businesses from 110th to 124th Street. The map does not include up and coming places on FDB, such as the Harlem Food Bar or Marcos Leatherlab, the cobbler store.
Lia San Filippo, co-owner of 5 and Diamond Harlem restaurant and co-president of the recently formed FDBA, tells the Daily News “the map was created to help people know that Harlem is here and helps customers find us more easily.” Amen Lia!
Back in 2008, I wrote a blog posting asking if FDB is turning into Harlem’s restaurant row? Looks like we have our answer not only in a map but in the form of an alliance group!

Back in November 2008, I wrote a post titled: Is Frederick Douglas Blvd becoming the restaurant row of Harlem? I am going to answer that question with another question, how can FDB not be now with another bistro scheduled to open this year (hopefully Spring 2012)? It’s called Harlem Food Bar as reported in The Wall Street Journal. They will be located at 2100 FDB, right across the street from bier international and right next door to Coco Nail Salon.
The owners of Harlem Food Bar are “working it” in the area where they plan on opening by leaf-letting area residents telling them they plan on “opening an old style Parisian bistro” with a hint of modernism. They plan on serving light tapas and hope to have sidewalk seating.
They are also letting Harlemites know that they are applying for an on site liquor license. I wonder if Harlem Food Bar owners know they could get approved, however, their license may be for only 2 AM if Community Board 10 gets their way. Yikes! Hope they’re considering that possibility in their business plans.
Good luck to them and glad to hear they are joining Harlem’s restaurant row!

It’s December 31, 2011, New Year’s Eve and we want to know, what are you doing New Year’s Eve?
Are you going to 67 Orange, 5 and Diamond or bier international? What about Harlem Tavern? They are all having festivities tonight with….NO COVER! We also hear Lido Harlem is going to be serving their regular menu along with a bunch of specials. They are not doing a prix fix so you can walk right in and order whatever you want from the menu. Not bad! So head on over to Lido Harlem for New Year’s Eve dinner if you have no dinner plans. Or just walk along Frederick Douglass Blvd tonight and have your pick cause with most of these establishments mentioned above not charging a cover, the night will be blast and you’ll still have money in your pocket!

If you like having your brewski past 2 AM in Harlem, enjoy it now at your favorite hangout cause there is talk of the drinking hours changing for new bars and restaurants to 2 AM. The topic has been in the press everywhere and last night it was covered on Channel 7 with bier international serving as one of the interviewees. Click on the image to see the video. According to several news reports, Community Board 10 is currently study the topic of not allowing new establishments to serve alcohol past 2 AM. What do you think about this? Should Community Board 10 pursue this or drop it and focus on other matters, such as gun violence?

Parents bring your kids to bier international in Harlem today! Santa Claus is coming for St. Nikolaus Day! Bier international, located at 2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd., will be holding their second annual St. Nikolaus Day today, December 11, from 3-6 PM where kids will have an opportunity to meet Santa and have their stocking stuffed with a treat. Photos with Santa will also be available.
According to bier, the tradition of St. Nikolaus Day, usually the first week in December, is a festival for children in many European countries. It finds its roots in legends dating back to the year 346 when Nikolaos of Myra, a saint and Greek Bishop was reputed to hand out gifts secretly. He became the model for Santa Claus whose English name derives from the Dutch Sinterklaas. It’s a European tradition that can be enjoyed universally by kids of all nationalities.

Guest of a Guest, the website co-founded by one of the Winklevoss twins whose been battling Mark Zuckerberg for what seems like ages now, has a feature on Harlem this week. It is quite complimentary, however, it doesn’t say anything new that we Harlemites know already. The article names a list of places to check out and most of them mentioned I agree are great places to visit. However, a true Harlem native writing about Harlem would have dug a bit deeper.
For example, Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar gives Red Rooster a run for its money, not only in food, but in ambiance as well. The same goes for Cedric French Bistro and Bar in Harlem! What about mentioning a place in East Harlem? Milk Burger has been endorsed by Anthony Bourdain and his lovely Mrs! Also, when you visit Shrine one can’t miss Yatenga, which is a fun place to hang.
Again, as most of us Harlemites know, there are a ton of cool places to hang in Harlem. Guest of a Guest apparently is just coming around (a bit late) and finding out, but hey, let’s welcome it!

A reader and wonderful Harlemite has informed HarlemGal Inc. that two or potentially three local Harlem business owners will run in this years ING/New York City Marathon. They are Mekia Denby, co-owner of Kidberry and Ousmane, co-owner of bier international.
If you plan on watching the marathon in Harlem, specifically along Fifth Avenue, look out for these two Harlem business owners so that you can cheer them on along with the rest of the runners. They will definitely need our support as they reach this point of the marathon in Harlem. If you want to track these Harlem runners on marathon day or any other runners for that fact, go to the ING Marathon website and look for TrackMyRunners via web!
The third person we heard might be running in the marathon is Derek, co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem. However, we heard he might not run due to an injury!
If you know of any other Harlem business owners that are running in this years marathon, please let us know so that we can give them a shout out and wish them the best!
For now, let’s wish Mekia and Ousmane, Harlem business owners, all the best as they go for that medal and finish line in the ING/New York City Marathon!
