Harlem In the News: Dining Establishments and Real Estate receive high praise

Recently, the Village of Harlem received high praise mainly on two fronts, real estate and dining establishments.

In the eating out area, both DNA Info and The New York Daily News raved about how there are several great places to dine uptown and some of those dining establishments have received positive reviews in Zagats.

In the NY Daily News, they mentioned Red Rooster and Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar in one sentence, specifically stating that Zagats says these dining establishments are “the new stars to watch.” The article also mentions “Covo Trattoria & Pizzeria, where happy hours go until midnight, most dishes are less than $15, and the outdoor dining is a Zagat top pick.”

In a separate article, The New York Daily News raved about how Levain Bakery has the best chocolate chip cookies in the City. No surprise there. Their hot and cold coffee is not bad either. Try it.

DNA Info spoke to our favorite Harlem Gal and the women behind Eat In Harlem, Sakita Holley, about how Harlem now has several restaurants “to suit any mood.” Holley endorsed several eating out places starting from East Harlem all the way West. Milk Burger, 67 Orange, Hudson River Cafe and more received a thumbs up from Holley.

Of course, what’s driving all these great new and interesting restaurants in Harlem is real estate or is it the other way around? The Wall Street Journal reported recently that “the number of Harlem apartment sales rose to the highest level since September 2008, according to analysis of city records. But they were only slightly above sales reported in the same quarter in 2010.” The article goes on to say that Harlem is not only performing well in the real estate area, it’s even attracting buyers who are from the second largest economy in the world-China!

Spend your Sunday evenings at The Supper Club in Harlem

There is a lot happening in Harlem for the month of October. So much activity is happening that it is hard to keep it straight. One event you should consider for your busy schedule is 5 and Diamond’s Supper Club. The next one is planned for October 16 and the theme will be Caribbean.

We went to the September Supper Club and…let us say…it was extremely nice and the food was outstanding! The entire menu was prepared by Chef Daryl Burnette, who happens to reside in Harlem with his wife, and there was singing performances by Gail Blache-Gill, who brought along some of her colleagues in the industry to perform as well.

That night, every item on the menu was perfectly prepared and the singing talent was out of this world wonderful. What made the evening more special was that it felt close and personal. 5 and Diamond is sized in space where everyone can see each other and the performances were up close. Sometimes when going out at dining establishments, it’s so crowded where you can’t catch a glimpse of anything. Not at the Supper Club in Harlem. The luxury is witnessing faces (some of them you might know).

Watching Chef Burnett create magic on the plate and Ms. Gill and her colleagues singing beautifully that night, which sent chills down our spine, makes me think-and say again-“there is so much talent in Harlem” its endless and this blog wants to observe it all.

So if you’re at a loss on what to do on a select Sunday night in Harlem, look no further. There’s the Supper Club at 5 and Diamond in Harlem!

Coco Nail Salon on Frederick Douglass Blvd is open for business

I walked by Coco Nail Salon, located near the corner of 114th Street and FDB, to check if they are open and they are! They opened last night, October 10.

As for rates, I know they are a few dollars cheaper than Z Nails on 116th. Their mani/pedi is $25 during the week and $29 on the weekends. Z Nails charges $35 for mani/pedi any day of the week. However, I am not sure on service and quality with Coco. They maybe less expensive, but let’s see how they perform on quality and service. If you check out Coco Nail Salon in the days ahead, please let us know what you think of the place?

West Harlem ranks third as best place to live for retirees

Did anyone see the article in The New York Daily News this past weekend on the best places to live in the Big Apple for retirees? I thought it was really interesting. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Morningside Heights, an area located in West Harlem, was ranked third out of 10 places in the City. Murray Hill was ranked first and the Lower East Side was ranked last.

The article states there are several reasons why it is a great area for retirees. Morningside Heights is “one of the easiest places to live… There is something to do every night (lectures, classical concerts, film series, etc.), and it will keep anyone young.” Amen to that. I don’t live too far from Morningside Heights. I now know where to go to stay…forever young!

Harlem Tavern making plans to weatherize its outdoor space

We went to Harlem Tavern this past weekend. We ordered appetizers, drinks and enjoyed sitting outside. While there we wondered, what’s gonna happen to all this outdoor space once the weather changes? We asked. Harlem Tavern plans on building a marquee, a roof like shelter, projecting above the outdoor space. The marquee would have indoor heaters and the shelter would be clear where possible. Maybe on the side walls, but unlikely the roof? The plan is to build the marquee in the next few weeks. And of course, this is all dependent on approvals and costs.

So if you were wondering like we were about whether all that door space was gonna close down for the late fall and winter or stay open, the plan is to have it available! That’s going to be awesome to have winter outdoor seating at Harlem Tavern, don’t you agree?

Sneak peek at agenda for Frederick Douglass Circle Dedication in Harlem September 20

The dedication of the Frederick Douglass Circle, located at the intersection West 110th Street and FDB, is definitely on for next week, September 20, starting at 11 a.m. and HarlemGal Inc. has the scoop on some of the agenda.

Actor and Tony Award-nominee Andre De Shields will perform and channel Frederick Douglass in front of all the guests and dignitaries. De Shields is well-known for this and performed as Frederick Douglass in 2009. See video below.

Impact Repertory Theatre and Harlem School of the Arts will give performances. And a direct descendent of Frederick Douglass will be present and either acknowledged or part of the speaking agenda.

So far, there’s no word on whether Mayor Bloomberg will be on hand for the dedication.  However, there will be several local representatives in attendance.

Not too bad of an agenda to start! Now that we have a sneak peek of the Frederick Douglass Circle Dedication, the next question is are you attending? Chime in if you plan on attending this event!

The 5 and Diamond Harlem kicks off Fall Supper Club with Bergdorf Goodman’s executive chef

Have you ever wondered how the food tastes at Bergdorf Goodman’s BG Restaurant? Well, wonder no more. There is an opportunity to taste it right here in Harlem. Their executive chef Darryl Burnette will be the guest chef at Harlem’s 5 and Diamond Restaurant this coming Sunday, September 18 at 7 p.m. Burnett will be treating guests to a menu of “Southern Classics with a Modern Vision.”*

Chef Burnette is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. After graduation from the CIA, Burnett had the privilege of working under such talented chefs as Charlie Palmer, Jean Georges Vongerichten, and Andy D’ Amico. Burnette has even trailed Marcus Samuelsson.

The menu for the evening will include:
PETIT AMUSÉ: Mini Country Ham Biscuit with Peach Basil Habañero Jam;
APPETIZERS: Mac & Cheese Spring Rolls and Shrimp & Grits;
FISH: Rainbow Trout with Black Eyed Pea Succotash; INTERMEZZO; Mint Julep Sorbet
MEAT: Meatloaf Wellington with Truffle Mashed Potatoes and DESSERT, Red Velvet Trifle.

In addition to the food prepared by Chef Burnett, the evening will also have soprano Gail Blache-Gill as part of the program. Blache-Gill has been touring internationally in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, singing the roles of Clara, Lily and Serena with the New York based Living Arts Inc. She takes time out of her schedule to sing Sunday night at 5 And Diamond Harlem.

If you would like to attend the first Supper Club of the season at 5 and Diamond Harlem, the menu is available for $65 if booked in advance, $75 at the door. 5 and Diamond also offers a flight of wines selected by sommelier John Soler to accompany each course, at an additional $25 per person.

Bier international in Harlem is turning one, a look back in photos

Bier International is turning one and they are celebrating this milestone on September 12.

Its been an exciting year for Harlem’s first beer garden located on Frederick Douglass Blvd near 113th Street. They have received a ton of press coverage, positive reviews about their food and beer, and I can attest that this place has been a hit since day one. There hasn’t been one day where I have walked by and seen bier international empty. It has been busy from day one.

Congrats to the owners and entire team at bier international for reaching this milestone! In celebration of bier international turning one, let’s look back in photos and raise our beer glass to bier international. May they celebrate many more years to come in Harlem! Salude!

Coco is the name of the upcoming nail salon on Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem

The new nail salon that is opening on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 113th and 114th Street on the eastside of the street has a name! The place will be called Coco! Interesting. Maybe it’s named after that reality show on E!?

Apparently, the owners that are opening up this salon in Harlem are seasoned professionals. This will be their third nail salon in Manhattan. Plans to open Coco Nail Salon are slated for mid-September! So stay tuned.
