New York Magazine says wet your whistle at two Harlem bars on Lenox Avenue

New York Magazine reports in their “Your New Favorite Bar” section there are two spots in Harlem they recommend to “wet your whistle.” They are: Ginny’s Supper Club, aka the lower level of Red Rooster, and Lenox Social, the new establishment getting picked on by Lenox Lounge!

NY Mag says Ginny’s  is a place where “the young and old can wet their beaks…and you’ll be able to see Asian and French influences.” The weekly magazine calls Lenox Social a place where “there’s something for nearly everyone, with a sturdy comfort-food menu, friendly scattershot decor, and a multipurpose space that simultaneously qualifies as sports bar, group-meeting ground, and quiet dinner destination in Harlem.”

So there you have it!  Two places to check out in Harlem-and on Lenox Avenue-this weekend if you need some ideas on where to go!

Construction begins on Harlem Food Bar

There was construction activity happening yesterday (March 26) at 2100 Frederick Douglass Blvd, which will be the home of Harlem Food Bar (HFB). And it appears Harlem Food Bar will have seating next to full length, open windows so that patrons can look out on to FDB? Very nice. I can already imagine sipping some wine and people watching!

According to Scott Siler, one of the HFB owners, Harlem Food Bar will be a 30 seat restaurant offering a reasonably priced, diverse menu where locals from Harlem can come and dine for less. And if you don’t want to dine at HFB, Siler says it will offer food delivery for those that want to dine at home.

Harlem Food Bar is expected to open in May! So stay tuned! We are all getting another place to hang in Harlem. Love it!

Is a Japanese restaurant the next place to open on Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Blvd?

For those of you who were hoping that the next place to open up in Harlem on or near Frederick Douglass Blvd would be a diner, sorry to tell you, it’s not happening. However, if you wanted a Japanese restaurant to open in Harlem, your wish is highly likely to come true! A few reliable readers have tipped off HarlemGal Inc about how the last remaining commercial space in The Douglass Condo, located on the northeast corner of FDB and 114th, has been rented out and the space is being prepped for a restaurant, a Japanese restaurant to be exact! This restaurant would be located to the left of Land Yoga.

We also hear the person behind leasing this space is an existing Harlem business owner. Their first business was on FDB, but then moved the same business around the corner and is still operating there. The planned Japanese restaurant we are talking about will be their second separate business in Harlem-and not far from the first business.

So there you have it! No diner is coming any time soon. Just sushi, sake, edamame and probably a lot more will be offered soon in this space in Harlem. Workers have been seen on site daily so who knows when this new Japanese restaurant will open. Hopefully in 2012! Will keep you posted!

Preview of Harlem’s Cedric French Bistro and Bar menu

Wondering what Cedric French Bistro and Bar in Harlem will be offering on their menu and at what price? HarlemGal has photos of the menu. Take a look!

The menu will feature five kinds of mussels, including curry, Thai, and provencales. Appetizers include risotto of the day, foie gras ravioli, beef carpaccio, and more ranging from $8 to $18. Main dishes include sautéed duck breast with cherry sauce and gratin dauphinois, steak tartare, roasted leg of lamb and some local dishes, such as fish and chips, jerk chicken, and burgers. As for desert, that is one area of the menu, I completely forgot to look at. My guess is it will be mainly french inspired deserts.

I plan on checking out this place this week since it is opening today, August 15. What about you? Are you going to dine at Cedric Bistro?

When you walk into the new Cedric French Bistro and Bar, located in Harlem at 185 St. Nicholas Ave, there is art work straight ahead that says “Remain Calm.” I think Harlemites are going to do the opposite, be ecstatic and extremely pleased when they walk in and get a load of Harlem’s newest restaurant. Cedric Bistro is red-hot with hot red all over. They chose a red color scheme similar to other Harlem establishments. And as for their menu, it looks very good! More on the menu later. Let’s take a look inside Cedric French Bistro and Bar.

20110814-061328.jpgThey have kept the L-shape bar where it previously was prior to the change. There is plenty of seating, around 40 seats. The brick wall is exposed with banquette seating and wood tables are strategically placed with chairs that have hot red seat cushions. The place looks nice or shall I say “very Upper Eastside.”

I will be checking out this new restaurant soon. How about you?

Milk Burger in East Harlem one degree separation from Anthony Bourdain

I tell ya! At the moment, there is no such thing as bad PR for East Harlem’s Milk Burger, the new hamburger hot spot at 2056 Second Avenue. After the little viral spat that happened a few weeks ago regarding Milk Burger allegedly burger-izing Shake Shack, who knew where Milk Burger was heading. Actually, I sort of knew its potential from that incident and now DNAInfo is reporting that Anthony Bourdain’s wife has given Milk Burger a thumbs up on twitter…to more than 18,000 followers! I guess this makes Milk Burger one degree separation from the Travel Channel star and Chef. Not bad! I am wondering now who will be next to step forward and so candidly and openly endorse Milk Burger? Any guess?

There could potentially be another ringing endorsement in Milk Burger’s future, but no one will beat this 140 character endorsement by Mrs. Bourdain: “I actually enjoyed my Milk Burger and I love that they deliver. Shake Shack is still my husband but Milk Burger can be my booty call.” Get that women her own TV show…and another burger!

A little bit of Poland comes to 67 Orange Street in Harlem

This past week I attended 67 Orange Street’s Cocktail Educational Series in Harlem and let me say, I have a new-found appreciation for that cocktail I order and for the person behind the bar making it. I had no idea what (or the hard work) that goes into a drink until I went to 67 Orange, located at 2082 Frederick Douglass Blvd. I had my cocktail breakthrough this past Tuesday where Zu Vodka, bison grass vodka from Poland, was the guest of honor.

Karl, the owner of 67 Orange and his guest from ZU, gave a quick presentation on ZU and then presented handcrafted cocktails with ZU Vodka. I had the Smokin Thyme, which included fresh raspberries with thyme, agave, lime juice,shaken with Mezcal, St.Germain and Zu. It was very good.That drink was right up there with my usual order at 67 Orange, the Baxter Street.  I gotta have that jalapeno flavor-even in my drink! If you like some caliente flavor to your cocktail, try the Baxter Street!

Cedric French Bistro and Bar chooses red color scheme similar to other Harlem establishments

I was walking along St. Nicholas Avenue this past weekend and could not help but notice the brand new awning hanging outside the old Mojo Harlem, which will now be-and hopefully opening soon-Cedric Bistro. In April, The New York Post was the first to report that “a hot new bistro was coming to Harlem,” at St. Nicholas and 119th Street. The Post also noted that Cedric would open in June. That did not happen. However, if you walk by Cedric you can see the work they are doing. They have their bright red color awning on display outside. Also, if you peak in on one of the windows, it’s clear red will be used in various parts of the restaurant, such as on seat covers and on their newly built booths. Red appears to be a popular color in Harlem lately when it comes to opening new establishments. For Cedric, Red is a nice transition from the previous color scheme, which I believe was more plum and purple tones.

Can’t wait to see the final touches on Cedric in Harlem. They should be opening in the summer as well! Stay tune…

Celebrate Bastille Day this week at Harlem’s bier international

We just celebrated our Independence Day. Now its time to celebrate the French! This week bier international in Harlem, our popular and most successful beer garden to date, is honoring our ally by organizing three days worth of events celebrating Bastille Day.

Starting tonight (July 12) there will be live music with Floanne,  a native French talent (actress, singer and director) based in New York City. Hear ‘Its ok to be alone’ by Floanne.

Wednesday (July 13) they will have a DJ spinning Afro-French beats. Thursday (July 14), bier international will have live French accordion music playing. And of course, their menu will feature French specials in honor of Bastille Day along with your favorite beer.

So if you want to celebrate Bastille Day right here in Harlem, bier international, located at 2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd, is giving Harlemites plenty of opportunities! Merci bier international!

Escape to Montreal at Yatenga French Bistro and Bar in Harlem, new menu items added

Yatenga French Bistro and Bar, located at 2269 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd (between West 133rd and 134th). Why? Because the French food is so darn good and reasonably priced. They have happy hour seven days a week up until 8 p.m. It’s right next to ShrineNYC, which offers live music seven days a week. And the couple who own Yatenga and Shrine are super cool, live in Harlem and have a beautiful family. We met them at the Ambassades Cafe launch recently and not too long ago bumped into them on streets of Harlem.

The last bump in with Yatenga owners, they told us they have a new
summer menu! We said send it our way! And so they did! Some of the new items on the Yatenga summer menu include zaatar shrimps (grilled shrimps brochettes and cabbage salad), beet salad with arugula, orange and parmesan cheese, goat cheese terrine wrapped with zucchini and roasted peppers, French pate’ and tartine. These are all small plates. As for large plates, Yatenga in Harlem has added skate, this dish use to be a special and its the one 20110616-113549.jpg
I order all the time (love it), seafood pasta, and chicken milanaise. New sides include, sautéed asparagus and sautéed cauliflower and raisins. And for
dessert, you can now order watermelon, parfait of the day, and crepe suzette

When we dine there, we always order the mussels and tuna tartare. The mussels have that perfect dipping sauce with bread and the mussel itself is actually always meaty. We like anything with avocado on it. At Yatenga, the tuna tartare is garnished with guacamole. It’s delicious and a different twist on tartare! For the main course, we always get skate, salmon en croute or steak. It’s a trade-off every other weekend on the large dishes. And sharing between us is a must.
We cannot stress enough how much we enjoy dining at Yatenga French Bistro. It’s a family run business. We think of and experience good French/Canadian food when we go there . And for us, it is our miniature escape to Montreal, but right here in Harlem!
